Integration

The town Nürtingen has been addressing the topic of integration long before the refugee crisis. Many examples of integration projects and initiatives have been started. Nürtingen has concentrated this task in the department Community Volunteer Work and Integration. Beyond the municipal measures there are numerous projects and offers from clubs, private associations and churches. More information can be found here:

Welcome Workshop German

With this workshop the refugees are given the basic important information in their language that they need for a good start in Germany.

The aims are:

  • To strengthen the motivation to learn German by explaining the importance of knowing the German language and showing ways to learn the language.
  • To offer information which can help to cushion a “culture shock“.
  • To present the inviolable values of western society.

The list of topics includes amongst others:

  • ways of integration in the job market
  • the dangers of illegal employment
  • alcohol / drug consumption
  • cleanliness and hygiene
  • bringing up children
  • freedom of opinion and religion
  • gender equality
  • various family constellations

The courses are given by trained ex-fugitives who have been living in Germany for a long time and are successfully integrated, together with a specialist. The idea is that they serve as an example for the newcomer and at the same time they receive recognition for their achievements in integration.

Integration in the job market and employment

An important goal is the early integration into the job market. To this aim it is essential to learn the German language (see language courses). At the moment the town is working on a concept to help refugees find their way into the job market and on how to create jobs.

The Federal Employment Agency is primarily responsible for all asylum-seekers. As soon as the asylum-seeker has received the status of recognition the Job Centres assume responsibility.

Information for the asylum-seekers is available in various languages on the Employment Agency homepage
https://www.arbeitsagentur.de

Information on the admission of foreign workers to the job market can be found under
https://www.arbeitsagentur.de

A lot of information is also available from the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (BafMF). http://www.bamf.de/

On the Job Centre homepage you will find the forms which can be completed in advance by the non-national residents.

Employers can approach the Job Centre to inform of jobs for refugees.

International Academy

People with experience of escape through migration are encouraged to share their competence and experience in the context of educational work. This brings them out of the role of receiving charity and allows them to make new experiences. This change of roles also boosts the integration process as it can restore self-confidence to the refugee and, moreover, creates a positive image externally.

The areas of involvement are many:

  • language tuition
  • passing on manual, musical and cultural skills (cookery courses, art courses, playing music)
  • political education for school and youth groups– discussions on the reasons for escaping, experiences whilst fleeing, the asylum procedure
  • Conflict mediator / promoting communication in order to avoid conflict amongst refugees or with neighbours.
  • Information for newcomers (map of the town, tours of the town hall, orientation)
  • help in contact with educational institutions

Café International and other weekly meetings

This is a co-operation between the town of Nürtingen and the private Childcare Association within the framework of the state programme “ Gemeinsam in Vielfalt“ (Wonderfully Different Together) offers an intercultural exchange between refugees, voluntary helpers and citizens. The main aim of the international café is to create a meeting place rooted in the “Kultur-Kantine” at the Seegrasspinnerei. The café is open to all refugees living in Nürtingen independent of whether they are in the primary or follow-up accommodation. This enables leisure activities outside the accommodation facilities. Meeting the refugees should help to disarm prejudice. The refugees receive help in everyday problems, and people who would like to volunteer their help have an uncomplicated point of entry to the Nürtingen network.

District “godparents“

The concept of district godparents is well established in Nürtingen.  It is intended to promote communication between the parents of primary school children from various backgrounds. The meetings are organised by engaged parents and the participants attend regularly. The main aim of these parents' meetings is an exchange on educational topics and child upbringing.

The topics are compiled jointly and discussed together. Potential subjects may be:

  • the German educational system
  • questions on upbringing and healthcare
  • possibilities for leisure activities
  • bullying and problems at school
  • nutrition
  • sport and activities

Intercultural parent mentors

The intercultural parent mentors have been trained in co-operation with the Parent Foundation of Baden-Württemberg. The aim is to have a contact person at the disposal of each school not only for parents with an immigration background but also for teachers and head teachers. They try to mediate independently and in partnership and to explain the educational system in Baden-Württemberg.

Expert committe for an intercultural society

Our social environment is becoming more varied. Nearly one fifth of our population has foreign roots. These people with their migratory history will in future express their democratic participation more actively. Integration policy on a communal level is the key to a peaceful, future-oriented society.

Nürtingen is playing its part and has strengthened the possibilities of participation for people with migration background. In December 2015 the town council elected twelve competent citizens who are to advise the town council and to introduce their ideas and intercultural knowhow into the civic policies.

Further details can be found in the rules of procedure of the Expert Committee for Intercultural Society.

Arrival and Orientation

Special voluntary welcome teams are actively involved in welcoming the newly arrived refugees (see “voluntary work” for more information). The intercultural online town map is an important aid for initial orientation as it gives the refugees and others an overview of relevant offers, such as low-price shopping possibilities, doctors, important council offices and points of contact, etc. The intercultural online map is available in four languages: German, English, Arabic and Russian.
